The University of Michigan Library is seeking a librarian to be a project manager and specialist in the area of digital preservation services. The successful candidate will work as part of a team of programmers, librarians, and other experts on a major initiative to build a new digital library system architecture. The new system will make use of recent developments in the open source community and will handle a wide array of materials: video, music, research data sets, historical records, and more. This is an opportunity to join a skilled and forward-thinking group, and to gain experience with modern technologies that support web-based research and archiving.

- Plan and track tasks.
- Coordinate activities among project participants.
- Document and share progress with stakeholders.
Data Analysis and Workflow Design
- Work closely with others to understand the complexities of technical and administrative metadata associated with digital objects.
- Participate in the design of workflows to facilitate preservation.
Metadata Policy and Schema Design
- Design and document solutions for storing metadata in the preservation object in ways that are consistent with best practices locally and in the broader community.
Preservation Solutions Research
- Gain and maintain a familiarity with relevant preservation tools, systems, and services that are relevant to the work at hand and of interest to the organization.
- Independently and in collaboration with others, share lessons learned through informal and formal presentations and publications.
- ALA-accredited master’s degree and 3-5 years relevant experience or equivalent combination of a relevant advanced degree and experience.
- Experience working in the area of digital preservation.
- Demonstrated project management skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
- Demonstrated aptitude for quickly learning new topics.
- Experience and comfort working in groups.
- Understands and values diversity and the importance of inclusion as demonstrated through a commitment to apply and incorporate the differences, complexities, and opportunities that diversity brings to an organization.
- Demonstrated affinity for technology.

- Knowledge and experience in the management, digitization, and preservation of archives materials, born digital and digitized.
- Experience with the practical application of the Open Archival Information System (OAIS) reference model.
- Familiarity with the operation of digital preservation repository systems such as DSpace and Hydra/Fedora.
- Experience with XML, including schemas used in preservation such as METS and PREMIS.
- Familiarity with systems commonly used for archives information management workflows, like ArchivesSpace and Archivematica.
- Familiarity with project management and ticket tracking tools such as JIRA.

Appointment is anticipated as an assistant or associate librarian. Salary and rank dependent on the candidate’s qualifications and experience. Position receives 24 days of vacation a year, and 15 days of sick leave a year with provisions for extended benefits, as well as opportunities for professional development and travel. TIAA-CREF and Fidelity Investments retirement options available.
