Purpose
Serves as the head bibliographer for the Nettie Lee Benson Latin American Collection, identifying and acquiring information resources that support the study and teaching of a broad range of Latin American subjects at the University of Texas.
Essential Functions
Chief staff member responsible for Benson Collection acquisitions and collection development. Sets priorities for collection growth for both physical and digital collections. Provides leadership, supervision, professional development and guidance for the Benson bibliographers. Works strategically with the Benson Archivist on rare materials acquisitions. Evaluates opportunities for special purchases. Evaluates gift materials. Prepares and presents relevant collection statistics. Serves as a liaison with UT faculty, visiting scholars, and visitors on development and use of collections. Manages Benson Collection acquisitions budget. Selects materials in all formats, including print, audiovisual and electronic resources. Reviews and manages Benson Collection approval plans. Keeps abreast of trends in Latin American scholarship. Performs reference service on a regular basis. Develops and builds relationships with campus and local cultural institutions and community organizations. Mentors students from the UT School of Information, Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies, Center for Mexican American Studies, and College of Fine Arts. Principal contact for Benson collection development matters. Represents the Benson Collection with UT Libraries, UT Austin administration, patrons, donors and other stakeholders. Represents the Benson Collection at: events; regional, national and international meetings; and, conferences concerned with Latin American Librarianship.
Required Qualifications
MLS from an ALA accredited graduate program or related advanced degree. Specialization in or thorough knowledge of the history and culture of Latin America/Caribbean. Bilingual English/Spanish or English/Portuguese. Demonstrated experience in collection development and management. Experience supervising and professionally developing staff. Experience and expertise to be able to lead and supervise a staff increasingly oriented toward digital scholarship. Experience and expertise to provide leadership in decision-making and strategic planning necessary for expanding an outstanding collection of rare archival materials. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, using tact, diplomacy, and discretion at all times including ability to communicate with diverse populations. Ability to work in a collaborative manner, interacting in a professional manner with faculty, staff, students, researchers, donors and public. Ability to organize short- and long-term priorities and projects and work with multiple deadlines. Ability to work independently and as a team member. Ability to travel abroad. Independent decision making, problem solving ability. Experience managing budget. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Preferred Qualifications
Collection development experience with specialization in South America. Experience working in a leadership position at a research library. Thorough knowledge of and commitment to digital scholarship initiatives.
