Position title: Director, Digital Library Federation

Location: Does not require relocating but remotely located individuals should expect frequent travel to CLIR’s Washington, DC office.


The Digital Library Federation (DLF) program serves its parent organization, the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR), as the place where strategy informs practice. Established in 1995, the DLF is a robust and diverse community of practitioners who advance research, teaching and learning through the application of digital library research, technology and services.

In the past three years, DLF has added more new members than it did in the previous fifteen. It has been a key player in recent important initiatives that contribute to the evolution of libraries and higher education, including the Digital Public Library of America and the Committee on Coherence at Scale for Higher Education, exerting great energy in pulling museums, archives, technologists and libraries together to achieve great things. We are looking for someone to continue and even accelerate DLF’s momentum. The ideal candidate is passionate about what technology can do for education and building knowledge, recognizes emerging trends and opportunities, and can help lead our community in a compelling direction.

General Responsibilities

The DLF seeks to further its mission of enabling new research and scholarship by providing leadership and developing opportunities to facilitate shared actions, resources, and infrastructures to extend, secure, and preserve the scholarly and cultural record in digital form. As a major program of CLIR, DLF is indispensable in providing vision, insight, and expertise, and for developing practical applications in support of CLIR’s mission. The director reports to the president of CLIR, and plays a critical role in CLIR’s evolution.

General responsibilities of the position include: providing leadership to the DLF constituency of practitioners, and to programs and projects of national scale in support of higher education; developing digital library infrastructures; educating and mentoring current and future practitioners; fundraising; supervising research and publications; community building; and advocacy.

Specific responsibilities of the director will include:

  • Articulating DLF’s vision in a way that signifies and promotes its values, particularly fostering a greater awareness of the international aspects of the concept of digital libraries and the need to coordinate all major activity as part of a global effort
  • Providing leadership and intellectual direction for DLF’s annual meeting, the Forum, and other programmatic activities
  • Working with and expanding the membership base
  • Identifying and developing strategic partnerships
  • Fundraising for the DLF program, and working with national funding agencies, private and public, to assure a rational, coordinated approach to project support
  • Managing DLF’s staff, budget, and assets to accomplish the programs and projects of the organization


  • An advanced degree from an accredited institution of higher learning
  • Significant leadership experience in a research library, higher education institution, or technology organization
  • Collegial in all respects, with a proven capacity to listen closely to the ideas and opinions of others
  • Proven success in collaboration with communities in pursuit of common goals and/or projects
  • Evidence of abilities in strategic planning and project implementation and execution
  • Understanding of higher education and its attendant politics, culture, and current challenges
  • Knowledge of existing and emergent standards and practices relating to digital libraries and other scholarly information resources and their Internet distribution; experience with digital library applications in research libraries, higher education institutions, or technology organizations preferred
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills: must be both assertive and sensitive in complex environments; must be able to explain, understand, and reconcile diverse institutional perspectives and needs
  • Evidence of the ability to motivate and inspire others
  • Experience with regional, national, or international multi-institutional cooperation
