Archivist, University of Virginia Library
The University of Virginia Library seeks an Archivist to transform access to manuscript and archival materials. A staff of 220 manage 11 libraries that serve a vibrant and diverse scholarly community of 15,000 undergraduates, 6,000 graduate students, and 2,000 teaching and research faculty, and visitors from the public and other institutions.
The Archivist provides expertise to facilitate access to a wide variety of rare and unique materials, chiefly in the Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library, as a member of the Metadata Analysis and Design team. The incumbent will establish, document and maintain policies for effective and efficient organization, description, and discovery of primary resource materials; coordinate arrangement and description workflows and participate in the integration of manuscript metadata into systems for storage, search, and display. This individual will also collaborate in the design and implementation of projects, workflows, and training involving the arrangement and description of primary resource materials as well as arrange collections and create, edit, and manipulate metadata for resource description in the archival information management system, library catalog, digital repository, and other resources.
Education: Master Degree in Library/Information science or other relevant Master degree.
- At least five years of professional experience with arrangement and description of manuscript and archival materials in an academic setting.
- Demonstrated experience with multiple relevant standards and practices (e.g. DACS, EAD, MPLP).
- Demonstrated leadership or project management experience in a work setting.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across groups to achieve objectives.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Experience with architectural drawings.
- Experience analyzing and implementing workflow changes in a work setting.
- Experience with ArchivesSpace.
Anticipated salary: $55,000–$65,000
