What is ARTstor?
  • A not-for-profit organization created by The Andrew W.  Mellon Foundation that is developing a digital library of art images to enhance scholarship, teaching and learning in the arts and associated fields
    • Image collections and descriptive data
    • Software tools to enable active use of content
    • Solely for non-commercial educational and scholarly use

3
ARTstor core functions (Green)
  • XML repository of high resolution images and rich meta data
  • www.artstor.org web site that provide tools to actively use these images
  • Browser based smart client
  • Java based Off line Image viewer/prsentation tool. Through a set of proprietary API, OIV interoperate with the ARTstor repository.

Interoperability issues
6
OAI Harvesting/ingestion of collections (Yellow)
  • Automatic ingestion of Institution collections
  • Automatic ingestion of Museum contribution using OAI harvesting protocol
  • Automatic ingestion of public collections using OAI such as Library of Congress American Memory

8
Import API (Pink)
  • Import of metadata plus images of smart objects or standard based learning objects
    • Local images with cataloging tools from OIV
    • RLG cultural materials objects
    • Harvard VIA objects
    • Import of PowerPoint images
    • JPEG2000 with embedded XML metadata

Import API (Pink)
10
Search API into external repositories (Orange)
  • Utilizing standard OKI adapter/bridge, ARTstor should be able to search and retrieve images from institution repositories based on FEDORA, DSPACE and commercial collection system such as VITAL which is also FEDORA based.
  • ARTstor should be able to search and retrieve images from image.google.com with standard Google API.
  • ARTstor should be able to search and retrieve JSTOR art journal articles by using JSTOR XML gateway

11
MetaSearch and Retrieve API (Orange)
12
Export API (Red)
  • Export of metadata and launch URL as text files as play list in Excel, etc.
  • Export of metadata and URL to Bibliography systems such as ENDNOTE and REFWORKS
  • Export of metadata and URL that follows the IMS Resource List Interoperability Specification

Export API (Red)
14
Metasearch into ARTstor (Blue)
  • ARTstor XML gateway, return metadata and stable URL
  • Follow and compatible with JSTOR XML gateway protocol
  • ZING SRW based
  • Allow external metasearch engine such as Endeavor, Metalib etc to search into ARTstor
  • By utilizing OKI adapter can allow external java based client application such as VUE and LIONSHARE to search into ARTstor

ARTstor Interoperability Plan
17
So far we ignore two major constraints!
  • Who can do what!
  • Authentication, Authorization and Intellectual Rights issues
  • How do we resolve these issues?
18
Standards in Interoperability
  • Following standard is a key point in Interoperability especially in Authentication, Authorization, metadata, metasearch and right expression.
  • ARTstor has been participants in key Interoperability committees such as
    • NISO – Metasearch Task Group,
    • NISO - Right Expression for Digital Libraries Workshop
    • Digital Libraries & Course Management System Interoperation Report
    • Internet2 – Shibboleth project
