James Madison University (JMU) Libraries & Educational Technologies (L&ET) seeks a dynamic, creative, and service-oriented colleague to provide leadership, vision and oversight of JMU Libraries’ digital collections. The Digital Collections Librarian will work closely with colleagues across L&ET to ensure that JMU Libraries’ digital collections are fully integrated into the Libraries’ collections and services. This position will serve as a member of a team of librarians and staff committed to effectively managing, accessing and preserving the Libraries’ expanding digital collections, including serving as point person for outreach to faculty, staff and students in the implementation of a digital repository system.

Duties and Responsibilities
The Digital Collections Librarian manages JMU Libraries’ locally created digital materials, taking a lead role in the creation, maintenance and stewardship of digital collections, including the digitization of special collections. This position provides strategies for effective management and preservation of library digital assets, informs conversations on scholarly communications and advises students and faculty on best practices for preserving scholarship and digital projects. The Digital Collections Librarian also collaborates with other units in L&ET to plan and implement systems related to digital collections, including repositories and digital asset management systems.

The successful candidate will establish priorities, manage projects, create workflows and identify digital collection development opportunities as informed by emerging trends and best practices in digital collection creation and management. Working within JMU Libraries’ distributed digital collections environment, this position facilitates communication and workflows between staff across L&ET units working on digital projects and ensures internal and external stakeholders remain informed and engaged. This position is also responsible for investigating, planning and managing format conversions and migrations; promoting digital collections; seeking grant funding for digital initiatives and for modeling innovative and flexible solutions that meet the needs of JMU’s communities of scholars and researchers. Responsible for a unit of 1 full-time employee and student assistants, reports to the Director of Collections.

Qualifications
ALA-accredited MLS or MIS and demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development. Experience managing digital projects. Knowledge of emerging technology trends related to digital collections. Familiarity with digital preservation practices. Able to be flexible in an environment of rapid change. Familiarity with digital collections development software. Understanding of the variety of metadata standards used in digital collections (e.g., EAD, MODS, METS, VRA Core, Dublin Core); familiarity with digital conversion technologies, digital object standards and workflows; ability to collaborate with technical staff that are doing scripting, programming and systems administration. Demonstrated ability to work effectively, cooperatively and collaboratively with a variety of individuals and groups across an organization to accomplish initiatives; demonstrated ability to plan, prioritize, coordinate and implement projects; excellent written and oral communication skills, especially for the purpose of describing technical issues, standards and procedures and comfort working in a distributed digital collections environment.

Preferred: 2 or more years’ experience with digital collections. Experience with XML. Knowledge of one or more scripting and/or programming languages, XSLT, HTML, XHTML, CSS and ADA guidelines. Familiarity with best practices relating to audio visual materials. Supervisory experience. Experience working with faculty and/or on an inter-institutional collaboration. Previous experience providing grant support and/or grant writing. Previous experience with digital repository systems.

The University of Michigan Library invites applications for the Associate Director of the Digital Media Commons. The position reports to the Director of the Digital Media Commons (DMC) and is a member of the Learning and Teaching division of the Library, reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Learning and Teaching.

We are seeking an experienced professional who has demonstrated success building and leading teams of specialized digital media and information technology staff, and administrative skills including budget and personnel management. This role requires a commitment to understanding user needs and developing the technical teams, services, and technologies to provide them. The candidate should also have experience in technologies related to creative and media arts as well as information and educational technologies.

This is a newly created position and is a full-time regular, exempt appointment. The Associate Director will support the DMC management team in ongoing operations and services and will help shape the programmatic development of future services provided with DMC resources and staff.

As a part of the U-M Library, DMC librarians and staff are responsible for supporting shared resources that enable students, faculty and staff to incorporate emerging technologies into their learning, teaching and research. These include labs and studios equipped with the latest systems, software and infrastructure for exploring technology-enabled connected learning spaces, 3D virtual environments and data visualization, and advanced creative tools for audio and video production.

Responsibilities*

* Manage the daily operations of the DMC, working closely with the director and managers. Activities may include personnel, budget management and facilities operations
* Work with users of DMC services and facilities to see that current and potential future needs are understood and planned for. Work with managers to track and report on both use of services and quality of delivery.
* Represent the Library Learning and Teaching Group in selected campus-wide activities and committees.
* Engage in active communications and collaboration with U-M colleges and schools, other IT organizations and administration to develop partnerships, shared resources and common projects.
* Collaborate with library staff engaged in transforming our ability to advance learning through creative uses of technologies.
* Identify opportunities for learning technology innovation, and assess obstacles and potential solutions in support of existing and emerging opportunities.
* Stay abreast of and assess learning technology trends, choices, and evolving user behaviors.

Required Qualifications*

* Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of experience working on technology integration in learning environments or equivalent amount of related education and experience.
* Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse users (e.g. faculty, students, and staff) to develop and nurture cooperative, collegial working relationships with a broad range of constituencies.
* Demonstrated experience managing the development of emerging digital media technologies in changing business processes.
* Demonstrated success in budgeting, project management, and mentoring of technical and creative arts staff.
* Excellent oral and written communications skills.

Desired Qualifications*

* Experience creating and presenting organizational planning documents
* Experience in use of social networking tools and content
