The DLF seeks a part time intern for two months this summer.

This is an excellent opportunity for a library student to learn how a library service organization works. The intern will work on a variety of projects including large-scale meeting planning, web updates, research, and written documentation.

We are looking for a motivated, organized, self-starter with excellent writing skills who is interested in the digital library field. Experience with WordPress and social media a plus.

This is an excellent opportunity for a library student interested in archives. The DLF has nearly 10 years of institutional materials that require organization and weeding. The intern will get the DLF Archive in order and write a brief history of the Digital Library Federation for use online.

The ideal candidate will have education or experience in archives and is an excellent writer.

The 2013 Digital Library Federation (DLF) Forum is seeking proposals for presentations, panel discussions, workshops, research updates, and hands-on, problem-solving sessions.

The Digital Library Federation is a robust and diverse community of practitioners who advance research, teaching, and learning through the application of digital library research, technology, and services. The Forum is a working meeting where DLF members come together to discover better methods of working through sharing and collaboration. It serves as a resource and catalyst for collaboration among digital library developers, project managers, and all who are invested in digital library issues.

Participation is open to all those interested in contributing to and playing an active part in the successful future of digital libraries, museums, and archives services and collections. In that spirit, and to maximize the Forum’s benefit and better facilitate the community’s work, the Forum’s schedule will provide many opportunities to actively engage and network. Job Summary

The User Experience (UX) Department at the University of Michigan Library is seeking a talented and enthusiastic Interface Designer. The ideal candidate will be able to create beautiful and usable interfaces, have a passion for understanding users, strong problem solving skills, and be invested in improving the library web experience. The Interface Designer will focus on interface design but also take part in the full range of departmental duties, including user research/usability, accessibility, and web analytics. The Interface Designer works in a collaborative team environment and participates in all stages of development ? from concept to implementation.

About the UX Department: the UX Department manages the design, user research, and content strategy needs of the library?s primary public interfaces – including multiple websites, access systems, search apps, and mobile interfaces. These interfaces provide access to over 10 million physical and digital resources and are visited by over 2 million users a month. This position will be a full-time, two-year term appointment with the possibility of renewal and may be filled in the Information Technology or Librarian job family.

Responsibilities*

Interface Design 60%
* Create concept sketches, flow diagrams, wireframes, mockups, and html prototypes.
* Create complete visual designs, web-ready graphics, and style guides.
* Conduct ongoing research into the development of new interface capabilities, enhancements, industry best practices, and user-centered design trends.

User Research 20%
* Assist with user research/usability studies using a variety of techniques (e.g. formal/informal usability testing, online surveys, card sorting, interviews, observations, focus groups, participatory design).
* Conduct regular web analytics to identify opportunities for improvement.
* Assist with web accessibility audits.

Project Management & Communication 20%
* Help scope, plan, and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
* Communicate project priorities and goals with project stakeholders, developers, and library-wide staff.
* Create and maintain project documentation.
* Participate, as needed, on library committees. May provide advice or assistance to other units within the University Library regarding user research or interface issues.

Required Qualifications*

* A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and training or experience in information technologies or an equivalent combination of experience and education. An ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library or Information Science, or an equivalent combination of a relevant advanced degree (e.g., Graphic Design, UxD, HCI) and experience is required for appointment as a librarian.
* Excellent interface design skills with a strong understanding of user-centered web design principles, typography, composition, and color theory. Experience creating complete interface designs and web-ready graphics.
* Experience creating concept sketches, flow diagrams, wire frames, and mock-ups.
* Proficiency with graphics software and prototyping software (e.g., Photoshop, Illustrator, Omnigraffle, Visio)
* Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
* Excellent written and oral communication skills.
* Ability to work independently and contribute and collaborate effectively as a member of a team.

Desired Qualifications*

- Experience designing and/or evaluating library systems or other complex websites.
- Experience designing and/or evaluating mobile interfaces.
- Experience with a variety of user research/usability methods.
- Familiarity with web accessibility standards and coding techniques.
- Experience with HTML/CSS and knowledge of more advanced front-end technologies.
- Experience with web analytics analysis.
- Knowledge or experience with SEO.

Working under the direction of the Head of the UX Department, the Web Content Strategist will collaborate closely with UX, the Communications Department, and the Web Committee, as well as library content creators, and stakeholders. The ideal candidate will have a passion for understanding users, strong creative and problem solving skills, and be invested in improving the library website user experience.

- Develop and oversee an overall content strategy based on user needs and stakeholder objectives
- Assess and improve current content and content workflows, and develop best practices for creating high-quality and accessible content
- Oversee and curate web content; identify new content needs; and use lean, scalable content development processes to enable the creation of user-centered, compelling content
- Participate in efforts to improve search engine optimization; monitor and assess web traffic; inform website information architecture and design solutions
- Discover and assess current and emerging content strategy techniques, best practices, and user needs

Project Management & Communication
- Manage information, develop project timelines, coordinate with project teams, track project tasks, and create and maintain project documentation
- Train staff on new content standards and best practices
- Assist in the development of priorities and strategies
- Communicate project priorities and goals with project stakeholders, developers, and library-wide staff
- Participate, as needed, on library committees

Required Qualifications*

- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., English, communications, information management) and 3 years relevant experience (e.g., managing web content, developing a content strategy, editorial experience) or equivalent combination of experience and education. For optional appointment as a Librarian, an ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library or Information Science, or a relevant advanced degree is required
- Demonstrated knowledge of content strategy methods
- Demonstrated experience writing engaging content for the web and a thorough understanding of effective communication in a digital environment
- Must have ability to assess audience needs and development content to meet needs
- Excellent organizational and project management skills
- Experience communicating with a diverse population to gather feedback, foster discussion, instruct, and document complex issues
- Writing samples will be required as part of interview process

Desired Qualifications*

- 5+ years of experience with web content strategy or creating/writing content for digital media
- Experience with content management systems and web development technologies
- Experience with HTML, CSS, and web accessibility standards
- Experience with Google Analytics and SEO best practices
- Experience coordinating complex projects in a library, web/technology, or design-related environment

Job Summary

Library Web Systems at the University of Michigan Library seeks a talented and enthusiastic Interface Developer to work on the front end of the library’s Drupal-powered website, VuFind-powered library catalog (Mirlyn), Omeka online exhibit management system, and other library web interfaces. The ideal candidate will have a passion for developing accessible interfaces to web resources, bring a clear sense of design to the job, collaborate with colleagues across the library, and have strong problem-solving skills.

The Interface Developer will work with a team of developers in Web Systems, developers in other areas of Library Information Technology, and the User Experience department staff to bring improvements to accessibility and user experience to the library’s website.

Library Web Systems manages the University of Michigan Library’s web site, the online presence for one of the largest research libraries in the world. The U-M Library’s technology unit designs, develops, and supports the library’s primary web interfaces – including multiple websites, access systems, search apps, and mobile interfaces. These interfaces provide access to over 10 million physical and digital resources to more than 2 million users a month.

Responsibilities*

Accessibility
* Ensure that library website meets or exceeds WCAG 2.0 standards
* Consult with other departments in Library Information Technology on accessibility issues

Interface Design & Implementation
* Collaborate with the User Experience department to create and implement complete visual designs, web-ready graphics, and style guides
* Work with developers responsible for the library website, library catalog, online exhibit tools, and other systems to customize and enhance functionality of the sites.
* Develop responsive and/or dedicated mobile versions of web resources.

Communication
* Create and maintain project documentation
* Participate, as needed, on project committees.
* May provide advice or assistance to other library units on web accessibility issues.

Required Qualifications*

* Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education and experience.
* Experience with developing and customizing Drupal themes.
* Demonstrated familiarity with designing to meet WCAG 2.0 accessibility standards
* Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a development/implementation team in a culturally diverse work environment.
* Excellent interpersonal skills and the demonstrated ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
* Extensive knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
* Knowledge of current web standards and browser compatibility issues.
* Working knowledge of PHP.

Desired Qualifications*

* Experience developing modules and themes in Drupal and/or Omeka
* Working knowledge Ruby/JRuby
* Experience with HAML, SCSS, or similar frameworks
* Familiarity with GIT or similar versioning control systems
